Pre-fabricated pedestrian bridge - Issue 2

Why?
- As no plans or records exist for the Carnarvon Bridge structure, options involving attaching new components for a footway to the bridge had to be abandoned, to prevent further damage to the bridge.
- Due to the type of construction, this footbridge can be implemented quickly, with the footbridge providing at least 95 per cent availability year round, taking into account limitations during flood events.
- Unlike other options, this alternative will allow the community to use the footbridge well into the future, even after a replacement for the Carnarvon Bridge is constructed.
- This solution is affordable and meets the community’s needs and caters for all members of the community including the elderly and people with a disability who did not have access previously.
What is involved in the proposed solution?
- The proposed location for the new pedestrian footbridge is on the western side of the existing bridge, and incorporates two pre-fabricated bridges joined at an island in the middle of Quart Pot Creek.
- The island will be used as a landing to ensure the stability and safety of the pedestrian footbridge.
What will this mean?
- Once the pre-fabricated bridge is in place, traffic conditions on the Carnarvon Bridge will return to normal.
- The new bridge will allow Main Roads to ensure pedestrians are crossing safely, by placing more separation between pedestrians and motorists as a priority.
- There will be minimal disruption for pedestrians and motorists during construction of the footbridge.
What is happening now?
- We are now working with council on plans for improving and installing new pathways and lighting to link to the new footbridge. We will also drill at the creek to test the foundations shortly.
- We are continuing our discussions with council and the local community to determine more details of the proposal so that preliminary works at the finalised location of the footbridge can commence urgently.
What is the future long term plan for Carnarvon Bridge?
- Main Roads Warwick have submitted a business case for preliminary planning and design, for a new replacement bridge as part of the next Roads Implementation Program. The design will include a dedicated pedestrian and cyclist footway and is hoped to be constructed within the next 10 years.
