24/11/2008 - Still time to join the YA Program
There is still time for young people in the Warwick area to get their application in for the 2009 Young Ambassador Program.
Community Youth Worker, Pam Burley, said that end-of-school and end-of-year pressures have contributed to a low return rate of application forms so she has extended the application deadline until 5pm on Friday, November 28.
“In consideration of young people’s needs we can make the extension and hopefully rally a team of young people who are driven to support youth projects in the coming year,” Mrs Burley said.
A key criterion for Young Ambassador selection is the ability to be a team-player and the desire to make a difference in the community.
“The young people we are looking for will want to see change and with support from the Young Ambassadors Program and Council, those changes could happen,” Mrs Burley said.
The program seeks geographical representation from Allora, Killarney, Leyburn and Dalveen, as well as the City area and is open to males and females, between the ages of 15 and 25. It also aims to have diverse representation from students, employed, unemployed, young parents, indigenous and rural youth, as well as people with a disability.
Mrs Burley said that young people have a lot to gain by becoming a Young Ambassador.
“It is a fantastic learning opportunity to mix with other people, create new friendships, appreciate the sub-cultures that operate within our Shire, develop leadership skills and build self-confidence,” Mrs Burley said.
Applicants are urged to treat their nomination like a job application. The selection panel will be looking for young people who bring a strong sense of community spirit to the Young Ambassadors forum. Successful candidates will start work in February 2009, after attending a compulsory team-building training weekend.
Position descriptions and application forms are available from the Youth Office in the Warwick Town Hall, from Council offices, or from the website at www.southerndowns.qld.gov.au.
