Mayor of the Southern Downs, Ron Bellingham was in the spirit of giving yesterday as he officially launched the Mayor’s 2008 Stanthorpe Christmas Appeal.

“With Christmas just around the corner, now is the time to consider those who are less fortunate in our community so I encourage those who can, to give and help others,” Mayor Bellingham said.

In his first Christmas Appeal for the Stanthorpe community, Mayor Bellingham said he was honoured to lead the campaign.

“I can clearly see by the depth of support from local organisations that this event is something the community values and is very proud of.”

Long-standing campaign partners Rebel FM, the ANZ Bank, Stanthorpe Plaza, Spano’s IGA, and the Country Kids, Free Range and Rainbow's End Childcare Centres, have been joined in 2008 by The Border Post, Stanthorpe State School and Stanthorpe Kindergarten.

“This appeal continues to grow and gain support each year which is positive not only for the community, but also for the families who will benefit,” Mayor Bellingham said.

The proceeds of the 2008 Christmas Appeal, set to run until December 17, will be distributed to Lifeline.

Each year a different local charity is chosen to distribute the donations to families in need.

Donations can be placed in the decorated bins or under Christmas trees at participating local businesses and schools.  If donating a gift or toy, residents are asked to note the appropriate age of the person or child to receive the gift.  Only ‘non perishable’ food items should be placed in the bins.
