Prickly Bottlebrush (Callistemon pungens)

Habit Rigid shrub or small tree 2 - 5m high
Leaves Alternating; narrowly elliptic to oblanceolate, up to 4.5cm long x 1.2cm wide; thick and leathery, apex with a short, stiff, sharp point; minute dots (glands) visible on both leaf surfaces
Flowers Purplish to reddish-pink "bottlebrush" type spikes about 5-8cm long x 4cm wide
Fruits Woody capsules which are crowded together on the stems in clusters 7 - 9cm long.  The rounded capsules are up to 7mm in diameter with an opening in the top

Habitat In sandy creek beds or close to rocky water courses, mostly on granite
Location Along the Severn River in the Fletcher - Glen Aplin area
