Hairy Hop-Bush (Dodonaea hirsuta)

Habit Bushy or open shrub up to 2m high x 1m across, with brances ascending and somewhat arching when laden with fruiting capsules.
Leaves Very small (5mm long), in clusters of 3 or 4 together, hairy, roughly triangular in shape with the broad end being lobed
Flowers Small and relatively inconspicuous; male and female flowers produced on seperate plants
Fruits Very showy, 1 - 1.8cm diameter, hairy capsules which have 3 or 4 angles or papery wings arranged evenly around the fruit; green at first, maturing to various shades of pinkish-red and red, then dark reddish-brown
Flowering September
Habitat Very coarse (well drained) granite sands in the understorey of eucalypt woodlands.  Also grows on sandstone in NSW

Threats Illegal harvesting by the floriculture industry & wildflower enthusiasts
