Regional Tourism Strategy Workshops

Southern Downs Regional Council Regional Tourism Strategy Information and Registration

With tourism now such a vital element of the economy of our region, Southern Downs Regional Council is undertaking a tourism planning process that will result in a Regional Tourism Strategy and a series of Local Destination Action Plans, to drive and manage the future of tourism in our community.

This is a very exciting initiative that will give the tourism industry an unique opportunity to look at both the broader regional and the more localised opportunities and to discuss ways of addressing any issues and concerns.
This process will ensure a strong, vibrant and competitive future Southern Downs Region tourism industry, that embraces the Southern Down Regional Council and operators throughout the region, large and small and from all sectors.

Southern Downs Regional Council has commissioned a global leading team of tourism consultants, TEAM Tourism, to undertake the strategic planning process and through their substantial experience in the UK, Canada, across Europe, Australia, Saudi Arabia and many other countries, we are confident that they will bring a breath of fresh air and new thoughts and ideas to substantially benefit our region and give us the competitive edge we need.

Southern Downs Regional Council believes it is vital that the members of the Region’s tourism industry are a key part of this process by inviting you to participate in one of the two one-day Workshops below on either of the following dates:
  • Tuesday, February 21 at the Town Hall, 72 Palmerin Street, Warwick; or
  • Thursday, February 23 at the Stanthorpe Civic Centre, corner of Marsh and Lock Streets, Stanthorpe.
  • Both workshops will begin at 9:30am and end at 3:30pm, with 30 mins for lunch between 12:30pm and 1:00pm.

The workshops will consider questions such as:
  • What is the Region's longer-term vision for tourism?
  • What is our competitive advantage and how do we compare to our competitors?
  • How do we build on these advantages and strengthen our niche sectors such as agritourism, wine tourism, ecotourism, sports tourism etc?
  • What factors might be hindering the growth of tourism within the Region?
  • What products, services and infrastructure are needed to support and grow tourism in a sustainable manner?"
  • Are we targeting market segments that are most likely to be attracted by our Region's tourism offers and will bring the greatest benefit to the Region?
  • What steps can be taken to further support the development and delivery of positive visitor experiences?
  • How do we make sure that the industry is working together in an effective manner to generate sustainable growth?
Your attendance at one of these workshops is vital, to provide the consultants with a comprehensive view of how we all want to see our tourism industry move forward.
These workshop will also provide a forum to consider initiatives that are required, if the Region and the local communities are to achieve a realistic vision for tourism growth and development, and without your presence your views will not be heard.

We therefore hope that you will be available to participate and please register below.
