Tips for Reducing Waste

There are some simple things that you can do to minimise the amount of waste you throw away. It is important that everyone plays their part in waste minimisation and these easy changes to your behaviour can be the first steps towards a healthier, low waste society.

 Buy products with low or no packaging

 Use reusable shopping bags instead of plastic bags

 Avoid over packaged products

 Buy products in bulk

 Recycle whenever and wherever possible

 Follow the waste hierarchy (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Compost)

 Buy recycled products and products with recycled packaging

 If you do use plastic bags, reuse these as bin liners

 Buy refills and refillable products

 Reuse glass jars and plastic containers to store leftovers and other household items

 Buy long lasting products instead of disposable items

 Compost or worm farm

 Buy fresh food

 Sort your rubbish

 Be a smart shopper

 Use you local recycling service or kerbside collection

At school

 Teach students about the importance of waste minimisation

 Educate staff and students to be responsible consumers

 Promote recycling and litter control

 Encourage students to take the message home to their families
